What to look for in a bread maker machine

Whether you're comparing your first automatic bread maker or replacing an old one, a few things separate a genuinely useful machine from a basic one:

• Loaf size options. A single fixed size means baking too much or too little - look for a machine that offers at least three sizes (this one does 500g/750g/1000g).
• Number of programs. Plain bread machines run a handful of settings. A wider range (sourdough, gluten-free, jam, yoghurt, cake) means one machine does more of your baking, not just loaves.
• An automatic dispenser. Adding fruit and nuts by hand mid-cycle is fiddly and easy to get wrong. A timed dispenser adds them at the correct point automatically.
• Power-off memory. A short power cut shouldn't mean starting the whole bake again - look for a machine that resumes where it left off.
• Pan and motor quality. A non-stick pan that lifts out cleanly and a proper copper motor (not a cheap universal motor) both matter more to daily use than the number of buttons on the panel.
